Nicaragua conducts constitutional reform consultations

The Nicaraguan government is conducting a series of national consultations titled ‘Hay Patria’ regarding proposed constitutional reforms. These consultations have included meetings in departments such as Matagalpa and Condega, involving members of the National Assembly, municipal officials, and various social sectors.

Co-president Rosario Murillo announced that the National Assembly and the Supreme Electoral Council (CSE) will hold meetings with the diplomatic corps and legally recognized political parties to present the progress of these consultations. The goal is to share results and listen to various perspectives on the reform process.

The proposed reforms include provisions stating that no laws or regulations from foreign states or international organizations will have legal effect in Nicaragua. Additionally, the text introduces restrictions on individuals seeking public office if they promote foreign interference or support military intervention against the country. The project also proposes setting terms for elected officials and other positions designated by the National Assembly to seven-year periods.
