Nicaragua: Daniel Ortega announces end to future elections

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has announced that the country will no longer hold elections to allow opposition parties to attempt to seize power. Speaking during the 47th anniversary of the Sandinista Revolution in Managua, Ortega stated, “Here, elections will never again be held so that they can try to take over the government and power!”

This move follows the recent appointment of his wife, Rosario Murillo, as “co-president of the Republic of Nicaragua” by a parliament aligned with the administration. Critics and U.S. lawmakers have characterized the Ortega-Murillo leadership as attempting to transform the nation into a “tropical North Korea.”

The shift marks a significant departure from the original goals of the 1979 Sandinista Revolution, which sought to overthrow the Somoza family dictatorship. Observers note that the current administration has consolidated power through political institutions, the state apparatus, and key economic sectors, effectively replacing one family-led rule with another.
