Nicaragua faces diplomatic tension and property disputes with U.S. citizens
Diplomatic tensions between Nicaragua and the United States have escalated following Managua's rejection of Natasha Franceschi as the designated U.S. ambassador. In response, the U.S. Department of State announced that the Chargé d'Affaires, Elias Baumann, would return to Washington for consultations, citing the Nicaraguan government's lack of willingness for diplomatic dialogue.
Emilio T. González, former director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, has proposed several measures to increase pressure on the administration of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo. These proposals include the expulsion or suspension of Nicaragua from the CAFTA-DR trade agreement, the imposition of taxes on remittances, international isolation, and further sanctions.
In a separate development involving property disputes, the Nicaraguan government has reportedly begun returning nine luxury homes in Tola, Rivas, to a group of U.S. retirees. The properties had been confiscated in August by the Attorney General's Office and transferred to the Nicaraguan Social Security Institute (INSS) without official notification. The return of the homes follows public reports regarding the seizure of the residences and their contents.
