US-Nicaragua diplomatic tensions and property disputes
Overview
Diplomatic relations between the United States and Nicaragua have deteriorated following the Nicaraguan government’s rejection of Natasha Franceschi as the new U.S. ambassador nominee. The veto prompted the OAS to pass a consensus resolution demanding the release of political prisoners and the restoration of public liberties. In response, the United States recalled its charge d’affaires, Elias Baumann, to Washington for ‘critical consultations.’ U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, characterized the refusal as ‘political theater’ and a sign of a ‘complete unwillingness to engage in productive diplomatic dialogue.’
Economic and property disputes have intensified. While earlier reports highlighted the alleged illegal confiscation of luxury properties in Tola valued at $15 million, recent developments indicate the Nicaraguan government has reportedly begun returning nine luxury homes in Tola, Rivas, to a group of U.S. retirees. These properties had been seized in August by the Attorney General’s Office and transferred to the Nicaraguan Social Security Institute (INSS) without official notification.
As tensions persist, former U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services director Emilio T. González has proposed increasing pressure on the Ortega-Murillo administration through measures such as the expulsion or suspension of Nicaragua from the CAFTA-DR trade agreement, the imposition of taxes on remittances, international isolation, and further sanctions. Concerns also remain regarding religious freedom and the ‘unjust detention of political prisoners.’
