Nicaragua higher education faces funding and quality crises

Higher education in Nicaragua is facing significant challenges regarding funding, academic quality, and employment opportunities for graduates. Between 2021 and 2025, the country allocated approximately 40.177 billion córdobas (USD 1.084 billion) to higher education, a figure that reportedly failed to meet the 6% constitutional requirement of the General Budget of the Republic.

This lack of funding has directly impacted infrastructure, including libraries and laboratories, as well as faculty training and research capabilities. Academic leaders, including Adrián Meza Sosa of the Universidad Pablo Freire in exile, have emphasized the need for sufficient investment, academic freedom, and specialized teaching staff.

Furthermore, the emigration of professors and researchers—accelerated by political unrest in 2018—has hindered generational renewal and the transfer of knowledge. Former rector Ernesto Medina Sandino noted that faculty selection processes have shifted away from purely academic criteria toward political loyalty.
