Nicaragua national budget and education funding

Overview

The Nicaraguan government has outlined its 2027 budget, prioritizing poverty reduction and national modernization. The Sandinista administration plans to allocate approximately 64.7% of its projected expenditure, totaling roughly 108,849.9 million córdobas, toward social programs. Additionally, about 51,526.1 million córdobas is earmarked for infrastructure and services, such as roads, hospitals, and educational centers.

Despite these projections, the higher education sector faces ongoing crises regarding funding and quality. Between 2021 and 2025, the country allocated approximately 40.177 billion córdobas to higher education, which reportedly fell short of the 6% constitutional requirement. This funding gap has impacted research, faculty training, and infrastructure like libraries and laboratories.

Academic leaders have also noted a decline in academic quality due to the emigration of professors and a shift in faculty selection processes, which former rector Ernesto Medina Sandino suggests have moved away from academic criteria toward political loyalty.
