Nicaragua honors revolutionary fighters in student and language school ceremonies

Nicaragua staged two commemorative events honoring past revolutionary combatants. In a ceremony organized by the Youth Sandinista, the National Union of Students (UNEN) and survivors of Battalion 30‑72, participants remembered Marlon Apolinar Zelaya Cruz, a student leader who died defending the Sandinista Revolution. Speakers highlighted Zelaya’s example of leadership and linked his legacy to the country's free higher‑education programmes, scholarships and the University‑in‑the‑Field initiative. Survivors shared personal anecdotes of his bravery, such as giving his blanket to a comrade during a mountain ambush.

Separately, the Centro Tecnológico de Idiomas “Héroes y Mártires de Batahola” in Managua held its own tribute to the young fighters of the Batahola gesta, who fell 47 years ago. Director Allan Reyes stressed that their sacrifice enabled today’s free, quality education and the centre’s multilingual programmes. Student Marion Martínez noted how language studies in Mandarin, English and French open professional opportunities and foster international bonds. The event included floral offerings, cultural activities and sports, reinforcing the memory of the heroes and the nation’s commitment to peace and development.
