Nicaragua commemorates 90th birthday of Sandinista founder Carlos Fonseca

Across Nicaragua, officials, youth groups and community members marked the 90th anniversary of Carlos Fonseca Amador, the founder of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN). A special session of the National Assembly was held in the town of Boca de Piedra, Zinica, where Fonseca was ambushed, and Vice‑President Rosario Murillo declared the day a tribute to his revolutionary legacy. The Ministry of the Environment (MARENA) organised an “Assembly of Militants” that included a red‑black march, floral offerings at Fonseca’s mausoleum and recognition of environmental activists. Youth organisations, such as the Sandinista Youth 19 de Julio, staged ceremonies in schools, parks and the Plaza de la Revolución, with participants laying flowers and reciting slogans; one youth said, “Carlos lives, the fight continues, he is a father of the revolution.” The commemorations highlighted Fonseca’s role in the struggle against the Somoza dictatorship and reinforced the Sandinista narrative of national pride and social justice.
