Nicaragua National Assembly eliminates Vice Presidency

The National Assembly of Nicaragua, dominated by government allies, has approved a constitutional reform in its first reading to eliminate the office of Vice President. The reform, which modifies Article 126 of the Constitution, replaces the position with ‘presidential designees’ (designados presidenciales) who will be appointed directly by the co-presidents, Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, to perform specific assigned tasks.

The measure requires a second legislative approval to take effect. Opposition leaders, including exiled figure Félix Maradiaga, have criticized the move as an attempt to facilitate a ‘dynastic succession.’ Critics argue the new roles lack electoral legitimacy and defined functions, serving instead to consolidate power within the ruling family.

This legislative shift follows previous constitutional changes, including the 2025 reform that established the co-presidency. Analysts suggest the reorganization may also be linked to the health of Daniel Ortega and could potentially facilitate the rise of his son, Laureano Ortega Murillo, to key international roles.
