Nicaragua to adopt seven‑year presidential term and bar opposition
Nicaragua's National Assembly has received a draft constitutional amendment that would extend the presidential term from six to seven years, with the possibility of renewal. The proposal, presented by President Daniel Ortega and previewed by Assembly President Gustavo Porras, also seeks to exclude opposition candidates deemed “traitors” or “coup‑plotters” from future elections. Porras said the new system would provide “stability, continuity and an effective response to the material, cultural and spiritual needs of the people.”
The reform is expected to be approved by the first legislature in September after a consultation process with diplomatic representatives and other sectors. It follows a 2024 amendment that extended the term from five to six years and elevated First Lady Rosario Murillo to the position of co‑president. International actors, including the United States, the European Union and the OAS, have condemned the measures as a further erosion of democratic guarantees in Nicaragua.
