Nicaragua: President Ortega signals intent to abolish elections

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has signaled an intention to abolish future elections, stating during the 47th anniversary of the Sandinista Revolution that he will not permit new polls to allow the opposition to attempt to "seize power."

This announcement follows constitutional reforms that postponed the 2027 presidential elections, extended presidential mandates, and elevated Vice President Rosario Murillo to the role of "co-president." Analysts and exiled opposition figures suggest these moves represent a continued dismantling of democratic processes in the country.

In contrast, the Nicaraguan government describes its current governance through the "Pueblo Presidente" (People President) model. This framework, which the administration has promoted since 2007, aims to center human development and national unity through the "National Human Development Plan" based on Christian, Socialist, and Solidary values.
