Nicaragua proposes constitutional reforms to prohibit foreign law extraterritoriality

Nicaragua is undergoing a process of constitutional reform aimed at strengthening national sovereignty and preventing foreign legal interference. Co-President Rosario Murillo has emphasized that the country’s right to decide its own destiny is a priority, specifically addressing the need to protect against historical patterns of foreign economic and political pressure.

A key component of the proposed reform involves modifying Article 12 of the Constitution. The amendment seeks to prohibit the extraterritoriality of foreign laws, ensuring that no regulations, laws, or norms issued by foreign nations, groups of states, or international organizations can have legal effects within Nicaraguan territory, except for treaties sovereignly signed by the State.

The National Assembly, led by President Gustavo Porras, is conducting a national consultation process titled ‘Hay Patria’ to gather public support for these changes. Local communities in regions such as Wiwilí, Quilalí, Jalapa, and San Fernando have expressed their backing for the reforms, which the government asserts will guarantee stability, security, and the continuity of social programs.
