Nicaragua to host Congress on Climate Justice
Nicaragua is organizing a Congress on Climate Justice to strengthen national actions and promote international advocacy for climate reparations. Javier Gutiérrez, Minister of the Environment and Natural Resources (MARENA), stated that the initiative aims to move “from science to action,” emphasizing the need for developed nations to compensate for damages caused by global emissions.
Nicaragua contributes approximately 0.2 percent to global emissions but faces significant economic impacts, with climate-related losses estimated between 2 and 6 percent of its GDP. The country is experiencing increased hydrometeorological phenomena, droughts, and damage to forests and infrastructure.
The congress will feature technical perspectives from the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER) and address topics including renewable energy development, agricultural adaptation measures, and technical cooperation. The event serves as preparation for the upcoming Conference of the Parties (COP) in Türkiye, focusing on four pillars: reducing emissions from high-responsibility nations, financing for developing countries, mechanisms for loss and damage repair, and the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities.
