Nicaragua inaugurates $42M Centro Momotombo for disaster response
Nicaragua has inaugurated the Centro Momotombo for Monitoring, Alert, and Response, a $42 million technological facility designed to strengthen disaster prevention and emergency management. Managed by SINAPRED, the 4,000-square-meter seismic-resistant complex integrates a command center, high-speed data processing, and a vast network of monitoring stations, including 89 seismic, 25 volcanic, 20 meteorological, and 20 hydrological stations.
The center utilizes advanced technology, including a fleet of drones for visual mapping, communication relay, and supply transport, as well as quadrupedal robots designed to search through rubble and collapsed structures.
In parallel with these technological advancements, the Nicaraguan Army and Navy have been active in emergency and security operations. The Army's Civil Defense has conducted training in several departments and responded to a major structural fire at the Oriental Market in Managua. Meanwhile, the Navy has been conducting inspections of commercial and fishing vessels across maritime and fluvial ports to ensure regulatory compliance and maritime security.
