Nicaragua disaster response and preparedness
Overview
Nicaragua has taken steps to enhance its national disaster management and emergency response capabilities through technological investment and preparedness exercises.
In late August, the government inaugurated the $42 million Centro Momotombo for Monitoring, Alert, and Response. Managed by SINAPRED, this seismic-resistant facility integrates a command center with a network of seismic, volcanic, meteorological, and hydrological monitoring stations. The center utilizes advanced tools, including drones for mapping and supply transport, as well as quadrupedal robots for search and rescue operations in collapsed structures.
Following this inauguration, Copresident Rosario Murillo announced that the government is organizing a national emergency response exercise scheduled for September 24. This follows recent activities by the Nicaraguan Army’s Civil Defense in training and emergency response efforts.
