Nicaraguan exile groups request U.S. military intervention

The Unidad de Exiliados Nicaragüenses (UEN) and the Movimiento Campesino Anticanal have officially requested a military intervention by the United States in Nicaragua. The groups argue that such action is necessary to overthrow the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, citing an unsustainable deterioration of democracy and systematic repression.

The request follows recent political developments, including Ortega’s announcement that future elections will no longer be held and constitutional reforms designed to permanently ban political participation for those labeled as traitors. The UEN’s proposed roadmap for intervention includes an immediate end to repression, the disarmament of paramilitary structures, and the protection of vulnerable civilian populations to facilitate a democratic transition.

This escalation occurs amidst a long-standing sociopolitical crisis. Since the 2018 protests, which resulted in hundreds of deaths, the government has moved to consolidate power by eliminating the separation of powers, a move the opposition characterizes as the establishment of a family dictatorship.
