Nicaragua postpones constitutional reform as Ortega vows to end elections

President Daniel Ortega told a crowd on July 19 that Nicaragua will no longer hold elections, saying the days of opposition‑backed parties returning to power are over. The announcement was made during the 47th anniversary of the Sandinista Revolution.

The government subsequently delayed the parliamentary vote on a constitutional reform that would bar opposition parties from future elections. Vice‑president and co‑president Rosario Murillo said the vote, originally slated for early August, will now take place in early September after a month‑long consultation with the judiciary, armed forces, police, business sector, religious groups and indigenous peoples.

The plan has drawn criticism from the United States, the European Union, Uruguay and other Latin‑American governments, which label the measures antidemocratic and warn against foreign interference.
