Nicaragua condemned by OEA as president vows to end elections
A coalition of OEA member states—including Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay—issued a joint statement expressing deep concern over President Daniel Ortega's announcement that Nicaragua will no longer hold elections. The declaration warned that the move undermines genuine political competition, violates the American Convention on Human Rights and is incompatible with the OEA Charter and the Inter‑American Democratic Charter. It urged Nicaraguan authorities to respect their international obligations and to guarantee equal participation for citizens.
The statement was released a day before the OEA Permanent Council convened a meeting to examine the situation in Nicaragua and to consider a ministerial consultation. Opposition groups in exile also sent a letter to the OEA calling for coordinated diplomatic, economic and political pressure on the Ortega‑Murillo regime. The Inter‑American Commission on Human Rights (CIDH) separately urged OEA member states to activate the Democratic Charter to restore democratic institutions and the rule of law in Nicaragua. Nicaraguan Assembly President Gustavo Porras later said elections would continue only after constitutional reforms that would exclude “traitors of the homeland.”
