Nico Rosberg details Mercedes' consideration to fire him and Lewis Hamilton
Nico Rosberg has provided new details regarding the intense rivalry between himself and Lewis Hamilton during the 2016 Formula 1 season. Following their collision at the Spanish Grand Prix, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff reportedly considered dismissing both drivers.
Wolff confirmed he had discussions with then-CEO Dieter Zetsche about the possibility of firing the duo after the incident effectively handed a victory to their rival, Red Bull. However, Wolff ultimately decided against dismissal because he could not definitively determine which driver was at fault for the collision.
Rosberg, speaking on the High Performance Podcast, noted that while Wolff was extremely angry about the lost opportunity, he believes a race suspension would have been a more likely disciplinary action than termination. Instead, the drivers were required to sign a contract making them responsible for 50% of the costs of any damages caused by their collisions.
