Nicolas Winding Refn returns with new film ‘Her Private Hell’

Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn has returned to filmmaking with his new movie, ‘Her Private Hell’, following a ten-year hiatus. The film, which premiered at Cannes and is now released in Italy via Mubi, is described as a dreamlike thriller blending science fiction and horror elements.

Set in a futuristic city, the plot follows an actress, played by Sophie Thatcher, as she navigates a world involving a manipulative director and a serial killer. Refn noted that the film explores themes of the father-daughter relationship and aims to create a visceral experience for the audience rather than delivering a specific message.

During recent presentations in Rome, Refn criticized the current state of contemporary cinema, citing a ‘sterilization of culture’ driven by streaming platforms and algorithms that prioritize safe, background content over provocative or creative works. He also shared how a near-death experience following open-heart surgery three years ago profoundly changed his perspective on the value of time and the importance of creating meaningful cinematic experiences.
