Her Private Hell releases, global rollout, mixed reviews

Overview

Following its out‑of‑competition Cannes debut on 18 May 2026, Nicolas Winding Refn’s neon‑lit sci‑fi thriller *Her Private Hell* has continued a staggered worldwide rollout. A first teaser trailer was unveiled at Cannes on 21 June, followed by a full‑length trailer and poster released by MUBI on 3 August, confirming a 30 September theatrical launch in Italy. The film opened in U.S. theatres on 24 July via Neon, with an 800‑1,200‑screen distribution, and entered additional markets throughout July, including Turkey, Poland (where it opened on 25 July), and Hungary in autumn. By late August, the film became available on digital platforms.

Set against a Tokyo backdrop, the narrative follows a young woman searching for her missing father and a soldier tracking his lost daughter as they encounter a deadly entity emerging from an unnatural mist. Recent descriptions of the film highlight its hallucinatory landscape and the presence of a mysterious figure known as ‘The Leather Man’. The project, featuring an international cast including Sophie Thatcher, Charles Melton, Diego Calva, and Hidetoshi Nishijima, marks Refn’s return to feature films after a decade focused on television projects.

During recent presentations in Rome, Refn described the film as a dreamlike thriller exploring father-daughter relationships. He used the occasion to criticize the ‘sterilization of culture’ within contemporary cinema, blaming streaming platforms and algorithms for prioritizing safe content over provocative works. Refn also noted that a near-death experience following open-heart surgery three years ago influenced his drive to create meaningful cinematic experiences.
