Nicosia General Hospital hosts fire and rescue drill
The Cyprus Fire Service and the State Health Services Organisation (SHSO) conducted a joint fire extinguishing and rescue drill at the Nicosia General Hospital on Thursday, October 22, 2026. The exercise aimed to enhance operational readiness, response effectiveness, and coordination between services in the event of a fire within a medical facility.
The drill scenario involved a fire in the Orthopedic Department on the second floor. While hospital staff successfully moved most patients to safety, the simulation included a scenario where one patient remained trapped due to smoke accumulation and spreading flames, requiring immediate intervention from fire and rescue teams.
Responding forces included four fire engines, including a hydraulic telescopic platform. The exercise also involved personnel from the Nicosia General Hospital, the Ambulance Service, and the Cyprus Police, the latter of which managed traffic to ensure unobstructed access for emergency vehicles.
