Nicotine use rises among youth in Denmark and Sweden
Authorities in Denmark and Sweden are raising alarms over the increasing use of nicotine products, such as e-cigarettes, vapes, and white snus, among children and adolescents.
In Randers Municipality, Denmark, 26% of 9th-grade students have tried or currently use nicotine products. Local officials are urging parents to engage in early conversations with their children about the risks of addiction and the potential damage to brain development, noting that products often mimic the flavors of candy or soda.
In Uppsala County, Sweden, a new report indicates that the use of white snus and vaping is rising among youth. The report, based on dialogues with young people and a survey of 480 guardians, highlights that adolescents are actively seeking more information about risks and requesting support from adults to resist nicotine. While many parents recognize the growing problem, they expressed uncertainty regarding the new products and where to find professional help. Regional authorities are now working to strengthen support systems and unify prevention messaging across municipalities.
