Global shift in youth nicotine consumption trends

Overview

Research indicates a global shift in nicotine consumption patterns, characterized by a decline in traditional cigarette smoking and a significant rise in the use of electronic cigarettes and vaping products, particularly among youth.

In Europe, data presented at the European Respiratory Society Congress highlighted a twelve-year trend in Austria where smoking rates fell from 24.2% to 16.3%, while alternative nicotine product use rose from 0% to 17.2%. Similar trends were observed in Ireland, where the proportion of young vapers who had never smoked a cigarette first rose to 76.2%. In Costa Rica, 32.1% of high school students have used electronic cigarettes at least once.

Concerns regarding youth nicotine use are intensifying in Scandinavia. In Denmark’s Randers Municipality, 26% of 9th-grade students have tried or currently use nicotine products, with officials warning that candy- or soda-flavored products may impact brain development. In Sweden’s Uppsala County, reports indicate rising use of vaping and white snus among adolescents, prompting regional authorities to work on strengthening support systems and prevention messaging.

In Italy, the Italian Society for Pediatric Respiratory Diseases (Simri) has warned of ‘masked addiction’ among adolescents. Experts noted that even low-level, intermittent, or social consumption of flavored products, pod-mods, or nicotine pouches can lead to dependency, causing withdrawal symptoms or attention issues in developing brains.

Complicating these trends is a pattern of unsuccessful cessation. According to Bloomberg, an increasing number of individuals attempting to quit vaping are returning to traditional cigarette smoking. In New Zealand, 14% of people who initially started vaping to quit smoking later reverted to cigarettes. Nicotine researcher Magnus Lundbäck described the trend as ‘completely crazy,’ noting the extreme difficulty of breaking nicotine addiction.
