Nicușor Dan seeks new prime minister amid political crisis

Romania faces a critical political juncture as President Nicușor Dan seeks to resolve a four-month government vacuum. The President is reportedly considering an independent, technocratic prime minister to secure the 233 parliamentary votes required for investment. Luca Niculescu, a former ambassador and current state secretary, has been identified by political sources as a surprise candidate who possesses the economic expertise and international credibility in the EU and US that the President desires.

Political negotiations remain complex. The PSD continues to support Sorin Grindeanu, while the PNL, USR, and UDMR have proposed Siegfried Mureșan. The PNL has stated it will not support any government involving the PSD, even if the prime minister is an independent.

Parallel to the political crisis, President Dan has convened a meeting of the Supreme Council of National Defense (CSAT) for Monday, September 7. The agenda includes long-term military armament plans for 2027-2036 and the Army 2044 program, as well as discussions regarding the consolidation of the U.S. military presence in Romania and the implementation of the European SAFE program.
