Romania: President Nicușor Dan holds consultations to designate new Prime Minister FAST-MOVING

President Nicușor Dan has convened parliamentary parties at Cotroceni Palace for consultations to designate a new Prime Minister, aiming to resolve a political deadlock that has lasted several months since the fall of the Ilie Bolojan government in May.

The Social Democratic Party (PSD), led by Sorin Grindeanu, has expressed its readiness to lead the government, citing its status as the largest parliamentary group and its 2024 election results. Grindeanu criticized the previous administration's management as the cause of the current instability.

Other political factions hold divergent views. The USR, led by Dominic Fritz, maintains its proposal of Siegfried Mureșan for Prime Minister but remains open to other presidential nominations. The AUR party, represented by George Simion, has stated it will not support any government that does not include them and has suggested early elections as the only solution to the impasse.

Additionally, Leonardo Badea, the first vice-governor of the National Bank of Romania, has emerged as a potential candidate for a technocratic government. The President intends to finalize the designation before his upcoming trip to the United States for the UN General Assembly.
