Nicușor Dan to resume government consultations on September 1
Romanian President Nicușor Dan has announced that political consultations to form a new government will resume on September 1. The President expressed optimism about finding a stable parliamentary majority but noted that a government composed of political ministers is more likely than a technocratic one. He explained that he avoided making new nominations during the summer to prevent sending negative signals to international rating agencies regarding Romania's political stability.
Several political scenarios are currently under discussion. One possibility involves a PSD-led government headed by an independent prime minister, potentially supported by UDMR. Meanwhile, the PNL maintains its proposal of Siegfried Mureșan for prime minister alongside USR and UDMR, and interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan has stated that the PNL refuses to enter a coalition with the PSD. UDMR has indicated it is willing to act as a mediator but has set a ‘red line’ against collaborating with the AUR party.
Negotiations aim to establish a functional cabinet by mid-September. The President intends to maintain influence over strategic portfolios, specifically Foreign Affairs and Defense.
