Nicușor Dan’s support questioned by PNL ahead of 2025 presidential race
Robert Sighiartău, the secretary‑general of Romania’s National Liberal Party (PNL), said the party is not certain it will back President Nicușor Dan for a second term. He noted that internal polling indicated Ilie Bolojan would have been the strongest candidate in the 2025 presidential election, but Bolojan chose not to run out of principle. Sighiartău added that Dan lost much of the liberal electorate in his first year, partly because his actions diverged from the platform that attracted PNL voters.
The PNL official also criticised Dan for what he described as partisan behaviour during the government’s handling of a motion of no‑confidence presented by the AUR party and the appointment of Adrian Veștea as prime minister. Sighiartău reiterated that Bolojan still enjoys full party backing and that any future support for Dan will depend on his alignment with PNL’s policies and political direction.
