NFL disputes Nielsen’s new TV viewership measurement methodology
Nielsen is implementing significant updates to its television audience measurement methodology ahead of the 2026-27 broadcast season. The changes, which include enhancements to its Big Data + Panel currency, focus on more accurate co-viewing measurement—the practice of multiple people watching the same program simultaneously. To achieve this, Nielsen will utilize passive measurement via proprietary wearable devices that capture audio from television events.
The NFL has expressed strong concerns regarding these changes, describing the rollout as “rushed” and warning of a potential negative impact on sports viewership reporting. Paul Ballew, the NFL’s head of data and analytics, stated that the league is concerned the new methodology may result in muddled or underreported audience numbers, which directly affects operations and advertising value. The league is reportedly exploring alternative measurement providers to ensure accuracy.
Nielsen CEO Karthik Rao maintains that the updates are designed to increase accuracy and have been developed in collaboration with industry experts and the Media Ratings Council. The updates also include latency-adjusted universe estimates to address timing delays in survey data. While Nielsen notes that these changes aim for precision, there is no guarantee of increased reported ratings for broadcasters.
