Niger launches construction of military uniform factory in Niamey

Niger has officially launched the construction of a military uniform production unit (UCTM) in the Saguia district of Niamey. The project, which covers 9,300 square meters, is funded by the Fonds de solidarité pour la sauvegarde de la patrie (FSSP) at an estimated cost of approximately 3.89 billion FCFA.

The facility aims to enhance the strategic autonomy of the Nigerien Defense and Security Forces (FDS) by reducing reliance on imported military clothing. The factory is expected to produce between 150,000 and 365,000 uniforms annually, depending on operational capacity, and could create between 280 and 400 jobs for youth and women.

While the project is framed as a step toward industrial sovereignty and a boost for the local textile sector, it has drawn mixed reactions. Some observers praise the move toward self-sufficiency, while others have raised questions regarding the transparency of FSSP fund management and whether such industrial investments are the highest priority given the country's ongoing security and economic challenges.
