Niger IMF financing and economic reform efforts
Overview
Niger has reached a staff-level agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a new 38-month financing program under the Extended Credit Facility. The agreement, valued at approximately 203 million USD, is pending approval from the IMF Board of Directors expected in early December 2026. Upon approval, an initial emergency disbursement of roughly 36 million USD is anticipated to support external financing needs and stabilize the macroeconomy.
The IMF projects economic growth for Niger at 7% in 2026 and 6.7% in 2027, driven by crude oil exports and agriculture. To secure the funding, the government must implement structural reforms involving debt discipline, financial sector restructuring, and enhanced fiscal capacity.
Alongside these financial negotiations, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry is working to revitalize private investment by updating the ‘Invest in Niger’ strategic document. This includes refining 13 sectoral profiles to provide information for investors ahead of an international forum scheduled for late November 2026 in Niamey.
