Niger and Sudan seek to strengthen defense and security cooperation

Niger and Sudan are seeking to strengthen bilateral cooperation, specifically in the sectors of defense and security. This initiative follows a telephone conversation between Nigerien President General Abdourahamane Tiani and Sudanese Sovereignty Council President General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

On September 18, 2026, General Tiani met with the Sudanese Ambassador to Niger, Dr. Ibrahim Awad Ahamed Mohamed Baroudi, in Niamey to discuss these common interests. Both nations face significant regional instability, including terrorism, the circulation of weapons, drug trafficking, and organized transnational crime.

Ambassador Baroudi expressed cautious optimism regarding the discussions, stating, “In the coming days, we hope to see good results from these consultations that were held between the two heads of state.” While specific modalities of the cooperation have not yet been made public, the move aims to enhance intelligence sharing and coordinated border management to combat regional insecurity.
