Niger cereal prices decline amid improved harvests

Cereal prices in Niger are experiencing a decline during the lean season, driven by improved national production and resilient supply corridors. According to the Agricultural Market Information System (SIMA), millet and sorghum prices fell by 1% during the week of August 5–11, 2026, while maize prices dropped by 3%. Year-on-year, the price of a 100kg bag of millet has decreased significantly from the 25,000–29,000 FCFA range in 2025 to 16,000–20,000 FCFA in 2026.

In the Dosso region, specifically in Falmey, the first millet harvests of the 2026 agricultural campaign have already begun. Local authorities presented these early harvests to administrative and customary leaders, noting that the seeds used were provided by the government to support food sovereignty.

While the price drop benefits consumers, experts advise caution as it may impact producer income. Additionally, the agricultural outlook remains subject to risks such as rainfall gaps, pests, localized flooding, and market access constraints.
