West African food price trends

Overview

Food prices for staples such as cereals and rice have shown a downward trend across parts of West Africa during 2026.

In Burkina Faso, official data from June 2026 reported significant declines in the cost of rice, local cereals, cowpeas, and edible oils compared to 2025. Specifically, white maize prices dropped by 34.1%, white sorghum by 30.9%, and local millet by 30.3% year-on-year. Imported rice also saw an annual decrease of 13.5%.

Similarly, in Niger, cereal prices declined during the August 2026 lean season due to improved national production and resilient supply corridors. The price of a 100kg bag of millet decreased significantly from the 25,000–29,000 FCFA range in 2025 to 16,000–20,000 FCFA in 2026. Early millet harvests have already begun in the Dosso region, supported by government-provided seeds. While these price drops benefit consumers, experts have noted potential impacts on producer income and risks such as rainfall gaps and pests.
