Niger faces energy crisis amid oil production and diplomatic meetings
Niger is experiencing an unprecedented energy crisis characterized by severe fuel shortages, despite the country possessing significant oil reserves in the Agadem basin. In Niamey, long queues at gas stations highlight the struggle to supply the population. The crisis is attributed to several systemic factors, including the obsolescence of the Zinder refinery (SORAZ) and a heavy reliance on imports by the Société nigérienne des produits pétroliers (Sonidep).
In response to public unrest regarding oil revenue transparency, the Ministry of the Interior, led by General Mohamed Toumba, has prohibited public mobilizations related to oil management, citing national security concerns. This move follows demands from the Collectif citoyen pour la sauvegarde de la patrie for greater accountability in how Agadem deposits are exploited.
On the diplomatic front, the President of Niger received the Algerian Ambassador, Saadi Ahmed, alongside a delegation of Algerian experts on October 19, 2026. The meeting included several high-ranking Nigerien officials, such as the ministers of Environment, Justice, and Petroleum, though specific details regarding the agenda or resulting agreements were not disclosed.
