Niger moves to reopen Benin border and boost ties with Spain

Niger's prime minister Ali Lamine Zeine travelled to Cotonou to attend the inauguration of Benin President Romuald Wadagni, signalling a possible thaw in relations after three years of border closure. Both leaders discussed reopening the Malanville crossing, which would restore a key trade route for oil, food and other goods and ease the high logistical costs that have burdened businesses on both sides. Security concerns remain, as both countries worry that a reopened border could be exploited by armed groups operating in the Sahel.

In Niamey, President Abdourahamane Tiani received Spanish ambassador Gloria Minguez Ropiñon. The two officials highlighted a reinforced partnership covering food security, rural development, women’s empowerment, health, education—including in conflict‑affected zones—youth employment, and cultural‑language cooperation. The dialogue underlined Spain’s long‑standing involvement in Niger and its intent to expand assistance in these sectors over the coming years.
