Niger recovers large military arsenal after Niamey mutiny
Following a mutiny in Niamey on August 28-29, 2026, Nigerien security forces have recovered a massive military arsenal. The seized equipment includes 382 AK-47 rifles, 36 RPG-7 launchers, 30 PKM machine guns, 34 armed Toyota pick-ups, and several armored vehicles.
In a televised testimony, Captain Roger Gabriel of the 1st Parachute Battalion alleged that the mutiny involved external support. He claimed that regional actors, including representatives from Chad, Benin, and Côte d'Ivoire, as well as ECOWAS, were implicated. Gabriel further alleged that a Chadian officer informed him of a planned intervention involving French special forces to support the insurgents.
While the military junta, led by General Abdourahamane Tiani, has characterized the incident as a mere 'movement of mood,' thousands of citizens gathered in Niamey to demonstrate support for the current leadership. Government officials have asserted that the organizers of the unrest are operating from abroad.
