Niger coup attempt and foreign involvement allegations
Overview
Following the attempted coup in Niamey on August 28–29, 2026, Nigerien security forces have recovered a large military arsenal, including 382 AK-47 rifles, 36 RPG-7 launchers, 30 PKM machine guns, and various armored vehicles and armed pick-ups.
Captain Roger Gabriel of the 1st Parachute Battalion has provided further testimony regarding external involvement. He alleged that regional actors, including representatives from Chad, Benin, and Côte d'Ivoire, as well as ECOWAS, were implicated. Gabriel specifically claimed a Chadian officer informed him of a planned intervention involving French special forces to support the insurgents.
The military junta, led by General Abdourahamane Tiani, has characterized the unrest as a ‘movement of mood’ and asserted that the organizers are operating from abroad. In Niamey, thousands of citizens gathered to demonstrate support for the current leadership.
The suppression of the mutiny by the junta, aided by the Russian paramilitary group Africa Corps, highlights Niger’s shifting security landscape. As a member of the Alliance of Sahel States alongside Mali and Burkina Faso, Niger continues to move away from Western security partnerships in favor of deepened cooperation with Moscow to address regional instability.
