Niger secures 203 million USD IMF financing agreement
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has reached a staff-level agreement with Niger for a new 38-month financing program. The agreement, under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF), provides for a total of approximately 203 million USD (150.02 million SDR).
Pending approval from the IMF Board of Directors in early December 2026, an initial emergency disbursement of approximately 36 million USD is expected to bolster public coffers and meet external financing needs. The program aims to stabilize the macroeconomy and support the government's 2025-2029 development strategy.
Niger's government, led by Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, projects strong economic growth, forecasting a 7% GDP increase in 2026 and 6.7% in 2027, driven largely by agriculture and crude oil exports. However, the IMF agreement will require the implementation of structural reforms, including enhanced fiscal capacity, debt discipline, and financial sector restructuring.
