Niger requests Algerian expertise to manage oil well blowout
The Nigerien government has requested technical assistance from Algeria to address a major oil well blowout at the Goumeri W-8 well, located in the Agadem oil block. The incident, which occurred on September 25, has resulted in crude oil and gas being projected more than ten meters into the air. As of October 12, the situation was reported as partially contained but not fully controlled.
Algerian experts, sent by Sonatrach, are working to analyze the circumstances of the blowout, assess damages, and identify technical solutions to stabilize the site. The incident has compromised the integrity of nearby installations. While initial findings have ruled out criminal or terrorist activity, the exact cause remains unknown and an independent investigation has been announced.
This collaboration follows a period of strengthening bilateral ties between Niger and Algeria, including recent high-level diplomatic visits and energy cooperation agreements. The Agadem block, where the incident occurred, is a significant resource area with estimated reserves exceeding 260 million barrels.
