Niger secures 60.6 bn CFA for irrigation and electricity projects

The Bank of West African States (BOAD) pledged a total of 60.6 billion CFA francs (about $105 million) to Niger in two financing agreements signed in Niamey on 28 July. The first agreement allocates 30 billion CFA to the Office National des Aménagements Hydro‑agricoles for irrigation equipment, aiming to expand irrigated areas, improve yields and strengthen food security. The second agreement provides 30.6 billion CFA to the Nigerien Electricity Company (NIGELEC) for a 23‑megawatt power generation project intended to increase electricity supply for industry and economic development.

The financing is part of President of the Transition Abdourahamane Tiani’s national redevelopment programme and was signed by BOAD President Serge Ekue, Niger’s Finance Minister Mamane Laouali Abdou Rafa, Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine and other officials. The projects are targeted at modernising Niger’s agriculture and energy infrastructure, sectors considered strategic for the country's economic growth.
