Armed groups launched a coordinated series of attacks across several villages in the Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, Nigeria, on Friday. The assault included an attack on the Kpenya Mosque in the Dekara district during Friday prayers, where numerous worshippers were abducted.

While police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun stated that no deaths had been confirmed, local residents and officials provided varying reports of the impact. Some residents estimated that between 60 and 80 people were kidnapped, while other reports suggested higher numbers. Survivors identified the Lakurawa militant group as the primary attackers, describing them as hundreds of individuals armed with guns, knives, and machetes. A rival group, known as Mahmuda, reportedly intervened in a clash with the Lakurawa, which allowed some hostages to escape.

Among those abducted were several community elders, including the Village Head of Ka’ada and the 90-year-old father of the Dekara District Head. Rescue operations are currently being hampered by difficult terrain, poor road conditions, and a collapsed bridge connecting the affected communities to the Borgu headquarters. A joint security detachment has been deployed to the area to conduct assessments and search for the missing persons.
