Armed gunmen launched simultaneous attacks on four mosques in the Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State on August 21, 2026. The raids targeted the Dekara, Kpenya, Sabon-Gida, and Gidan-Zana communities during Friday prayers.

While local officials reported that at least 60 people were abducted, residents and social media footage suggest the scale may be much larger, with some estimates claiming as many as 600 people—including women, children, and the elderly—were taken into the surrounding forests. Local authorities confirmed that approximately 30 people were killed during the assault and were subsequently buried.

In response, President Bola Tinubu has ordered the military, police, and Department of State Services (DSS) to launch a coordinated rescue operation. The President condemned the attack as a cowardly act by enemies of humanity and vowed that those responsible would face justice. The Niger State government has also deployed joint security forces to track the attackers.

The incident has caused significant displacement, with reports indicating that at least 2,000 residents have fled across the border into the Benin Republic. Amnesty International has called for urgent action to secure the release of the worshippers, noting a rising trend of mass abductions across northern Nigeria.
