Nigeria launches rescue operation for 600 abducted mosque worshippers
Nigeria has launched a major coordinated security operation to rescue hundreds of worshippers following terrorist attacks in Niger State. President Bola Tinubu ordered the mission after reports emerged that an estimated 600 people were abducted during attacks on four communities in the Borgu Local Government Area, including Dekara, on August 21, 2026.
The attacks, which targeted several communities including Gbeji, Kpenya, and Giyan Gbasu, resulted in the deaths of approximately 30 people. In one instance, terrorists reportedly entered the Dekara Central Mosque during Jumu’at prayers to abduct worshippers.
The rescue effort involves the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, and other intelligence agencies. The Inspector-General of Police has deployed additional tactical teams and air support to the region, with Assistant Inspector-General Victor Olaiya assigned to coordinate the operation.
Religious leaders, including the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, have condemned the violence, describing it as an assault on the sanctity of worship and a threat to all Nigerians regardless of faith.
