Nigeria addresses youth unemployment through skills training and readiness initiatives

Efforts to address youth unemployment in Nigeria are focusing on both skill acquisition and workplace readiness. Business consultant Vivian Ani has argued that the crisis is driven by a shortage of character, practical skills, and professional attitudes rather than just a lack of available jobs. She noted that many graduates possess degrees that do not meet modern market demands and urged young professionals to prioritize internships and practical experience over additional certificates.

In response to the need for practical training, a new vocational program has launched in Lagos for residents aged 18 to 35. This initiative is a partnership between the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund, King’s Trust International, and the Field of Skills and Dreams VTE Academy. The program offers free training in four vocational fields designed to provide a direct route to employment or entrepreneurship. Applications for this intake are scheduled to close on September 2, 2026.
