Nigeria advances renewable energy for agriculture and launches gas decarbonisation working group

Nigeria’s federal government is intensifying its energy transition agenda. Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu announced a strategy to deploy renewable energy across the agricultural sector, aiming to boost productivity, reduce post‑harvest losses, create jobs and strengthen food security. He highlighted the role of reliable electricity in powering irrigation, rice mills, cold storage and agro‑processing, and urged partnerships to accelerate renewable technologies in rural areas.

In a related move, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas) Ekperikpe Ekpo inaugurated the Joint Decarbonisation Working Group (JDWG) for the oil and gas sector, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to end routine gas flaring by 2030 and to use natural gas as a transition fuel. The group will coordinate policy, monitoring and investment to reduce methane emissions and improve the sector’s competitiveness while supporting broader economic development.
