Africa industrialization efforts expand through refining and manufacturing

African industrial leaders and governments are pursuing large-scale manufacturing projects to reduce reliance on imports and bolster regional energy and commodity security.

In Nigeria, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery has reached a processing capacity of 700,000 barrels per day, aiming to transform the country from a crude exporter dependent on imported refined products into a regional energy hub. The Nigerian government has expressed intentions to expand refining capacity to four million barrels to serve the broader African continent. Alongside Dangote, industrialist Abdul Samad Rabiu is expanding his BUA Group, which has seen significant profit growth in its cement and food sectors.

In Kenya, the government is advancing industrialization through a $100 million palm oil processing plant in Lamu to reduce the nation's high import bill for crude palm oil. This project is part of a broader effort to turn the coastal region into an agricultural and energy hub, complemented by ongoing discussions regarding petroleum refinery developments.
