Nigeria advances oil and gas targets through production

Overview

Nigeria is pursuing ambitious energy targets, aiming for 3 million barrels of crude oil per day and 12 billion cubic feet of gas output daily by 2030. To drive this, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) plans to implement annual or biannual licensing rounds and introduce “drill-or-drop” clauses to prevent passive ownership. Investment remains a central pillar, with the NUPRC targeting up to $50 billion in offshore oil and gas investments over the next five years.

Recent production data shows progress toward these goals. In August 2026, crude oil and condensate production rose by 0.4% to an average of 1,677,777 barrels per day, allowing Nigeria to meet its OPEC production quota for the fourth consecutive month. This growth was attributed to the resolution of operational issues at the Erha field’s Single Buoy Mooring facility. However, current output remains below the 1.84 million barrels per day target set in the federal budget.

In the gas sector, NNPC Ltd. is working to transform Nigeria into a global gas hub through its Gas Master Plan. The company aims to increase proven reserves from 215 trillion cubic feet to over 600 trillion cubic feet, targeting production of 12 billion standard cubic feet per day by 2030. This is supported by the expansion of LNG capacity, including the Train 7 project, which is intended to supply Atlantic Basin and Asian markets.

Despite these efforts, the E3G think tank warns that Nigeria’s oil revenue could plunge by more than 60 per cent starting from 2030 due to the global energy transition.
