Nigeria and AfDB Call for African Control of Critical Minerals
At the African Development Bank’s Ministerial Forum on Critical Minerals, Value Chain and Beneficiation held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dele Alake and AfDB President Sidi Ould Tah urged African countries to take stronger ownership of the continent’s vast mineral wealth. They called for data sovereignty, regional cooperation and strategic financing to move beyond exporting raw minerals.
Alake advocated the adoption of the Pan African Resource Reporting Code (PARC) to replace the JORC standard and proposed a West African minerals‑processing corridor linking Lagos to Dakar, modelled on the Lobito Corridor. The forum adopted the Abidjan Declaration, which places financing and beneficiation at the centre of Africa’s mineral transformation agenda. More than 20 ministers and over 30 member countries participated, and the discussion highlighted critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, manganese and rare earths.
The United States International Development Finance Corporation announced an expanded push into West African mining, reviewing projects from its new regional office in Abidjan, while civil‑society groups called for people‑centred beneficiation to ensure jobs and community benefits.
