Nigeria demands action against Afrophobia as 83 citizens are repatriated from South Africa
Eighty-three Nigerians have arrived in Lagos from South Africa following a repatriation exercise. The returnees traveled aboard a South African Airways flight from Johannesburg and were accompanied by officials from the Nigerian Consulate-General. This latest group was supported by private individuals who funded the flight tickets. The returnees are undergoing documentation and profiling by government agencies before being reunited with their families.
Separately, Nigeria's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sola Enikanolaiye, has called for urgent action to combat Afrophobic and xenophobic violence in South Africa. He reported that approximately 90 Nigerians have been killed in such attacks since June 2022, with new incidents of violence and displacement recorded in 2026.
Enikanolaiye emphasized the historical solidarity between the two nations, noting that Nigeria contributed over $60 billion to South Africa's liberation struggle. He urged South African authorities to implement stronger migration governance and responsible leadership to protect African nationals and preserve regional stability.
